Step 2: Identify the Tile Type

The tile decides what is safe. This is not optional.

Glazed ceramic is usually the most forgiving surface. Mild professional acid cleaners made for cement haze are typically acceptable on the glaze. Abrasive pads are still a bad idea.

Porcelain is dense and low-absorption. That does not mean it is scratch-proof. Polished porcelain shows swirl marks from dirty cloths and aggressive pads. Matte and textured porcelain hide residue in the profile and need more rinsing, not more grit. Lappato and satin finishes sit in the middle: they show both film and micro-scratches.
